Marvellous Mosaics

Over the last two weeks Room 9 have been working on Mosaics. We started working on them with Mrs Day on a Thursday. First we could choose between a bird, a fish, a windmill or a palm tree. These were paper mosaics. We cut out lots of coloured paper to create our pictures.

The first step in making our real mosaic out of tiles was to plan our picture. We chose our board, traced around it in our art book, drew our design in our books and when we were happy with that, we drew our design on our board.

Next we smashed up the tile with a rock to make lots of little pieces. Mr T showed us how to choose the right pieces, then it was on to the gluing. This took quite a while and some of us haven't finished yet. Here are some pictures of our paper mosaics and unfinished tile mosaics.

Tryathlon

Oh no, today is the triathlon. Some of the tryathlon we like, some we don't. We are bad at running and swimming, but don't mind biking.

We got called up. Mr Taylor said, "On your marks, GO!!"
We were whizzing around the track like little leopards one lap, two laps, three laps.
Now we quickly jumped on our bikes one lap, two laps, three laps around we went. We jumped off our bikes, Took off our helmets and ran to the swimming pool. Mrs Dawkins was there to show us where to go. Gus, Marco then Izaak and Ben 1, 2, 3, 4. Out we get. We were running to the finish line. Marco, Gus, Izaak and Ben. Izaak came 5th, and Ben came 6th. We did ok.

Mathletics

On Friday our teacher gave us our Mathletics account. Mathletics is a homework program which is
very fun and hard!!! Our teachers gave us work to do once we finish our assignment. We are allowed to play games and verse people all around world which I think is very cool. You get to make your character and choose the back round, hat, eyes, nose, hair and lips. Tell your friends and family.

Swiming Sports 2012

It was the day of swimming sports. Everybody was nervous. We all went in cars to Riwaka School pool. When we got there we went into the changing rooms and got dressed.

First it was youngest to oldest on back stroke, then breast stroke, then finally freestyle. It was time for survival skills. We had to bring spare clothes and a flotation device. We went in six groups and had to keep each other warm by huddling in a group with life jackets.

We went from group to group.
The groups were treading water, land rescue with a stick or rope, treading water with clothing, using a flotation device and using a life jacket.

Our Portraits

Room 9 have been very busy for the last 2 weeks doing portraits of ourselves.
We had to draw a simple portrait of ourselves with these simple steps:

1. We drew a simple oval for the head of our face.

2. We had to draw a line down the middle of our faces, then we had to draw a line half way going the other way for the nose line, then another for the mouth line.

3. Then we had to draw the eyes on the middle line, following with the nose coming down from the eyes, followed by the mouth.

4. Once we had done that we moved onto the hair. Some people drew their hair in a pony tail, some people drew plaits and some people drew their hair down.

5. Now we had to draw the details, such as the fluffy eyebrows, and the long eyelashes.

6. And last for the drawing of ourselves some people put in shade but not every one did.

Then we had stuck our portraits on a big piece of white paper, and drew a vivid border around the portraits. Once we had done that we were on to writing about our selves and this is how we did it:

First we wrote who is special to us such as our family, friends and pets. Then on the other side of the page we wrote some of our favorite things, things we are good at and things we would like to improve on. At the bottom of the page, we wrote o
ur age and next to that we wrote our, hobbies.
We then coloured our names in so they would stand out. Some people decided to draw pictures, and colour more in. At the very top of our page we stuck on a photo of us and hopefully with our good instructions that you could try it some time.

These portraits are of Jess, Travis, Phoebe and Izzy.

THE WORST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!

Oh no! Tryathlon day is here! The 17th February 2012. The worst day of my life! This event happens every year at Mapua School. Last year was okay. My chain broke on my bike. I got a head start and came 6th! This year it didn't break. Sigh! It starts with Year 2's, then Year 1's, then 0's, 3's, 4's, and Year 5's. Oh no! Year 6 boys have just gone! Year 6 girls get called up. I want to die! Just standing here is making me suffer! On your marks, get set, GO! I set my pace. I ran round the field then I ran back to the bike stands. I jump on my bike. I pedal 3 times around the field. I go, go, go. When I stop I ran to the swimming pool. I jump in. 4 lengths freestyle. I over take 2 people. YAY ! Mum and dad were watching, staring with blue and brown eyes as I ran to the finish line. 1 point was whacked on yellow house 's score. FINALLY! I yell in my head. IT'S OVER !!!

THE END

Mapua School Tryathlon

We were at the starting line, the year six boys. On your marks, get set, goooo and off we went.
In my head I counted how many laps I was meant to run. 1, 2, 3, then on my bike. I heard the crowd screaming, "Go boys, go!" and that sound made me want to put in 'my all' so I did.
I heard the teachers saying count in your head how many laps you're doing.

Two more laps though. Come on! Bike your hardest! 1 more lap to go. OK. Last lap. Let's bike our hardest. I passed a couple of people. I slammed my bike down and took my shoes off. I zoomed off to the pool.

The pool was a bit crowded to over take but I managed to go my fastest. I did 4 lengths then got out. I sprinted to the finish line and ended up making 5th place.

Mathletics

During Week 4 of Term 1, Room 9 started our homework called Mathletics. Mathletics is an online learning revision of maths. This includes shapes, division, multiplication and much, much more. Mathletics has got a timing game when you play people all over New Zealand and the world. You can also play against the computer which is a lot of fun. This is called Live Mathletics.

You can make a person on Mathletics and unlock lots of cool clothing and accessories.

I have learned how to get the answer for measurement with questions like: Change km to m. 0.56km=560m. We have enjoyed Mathletics for the time we have had it, hope to learn lots and would like to get it next year.

Our Stunning Mosaics

You know we're arty so let's have a party!!! First Mrs. Day showed us some ancient Greek mosaics on You Tube. After that we chose a pattern, the choices were: a windmill, a bird, a fish and a palm tree. At this stage we got big pieces of coloured paper and with scissors, we cut the coloured paper into scanty, minikin sized pieces that we glued onto the patterns that we chose a bit earlier.

Then a while after that when we finished, Mr. Taylor gave us name tags that we stuck onto the bottom right corner of the mosaics. When everyone has finished that we will begin one that instead of skimpy, paltry paper pieces we will use small coloured tiles that we will stick onto blocks, then we are done!
